1912- 1942 - Korczak Orphanage fate in Warsaw : Krochmalna 92 - Chłodna 33 - Sienna 16

Korczak’s Orphanage was build at 92 Krochmalna (street) by the Orphans Aid Society. It was a two-storey building on the city outskirts. Dom Sierot at Krochmalna str.opened on October 7, 1912 and 85 children were admitted.

On October 2nd 1940 Fischer signed the decree on setting up a ghetto in Warsaw. In late 1940 (Novemeber 29 ) Orphanage was definitely moved to "ghetto area" and temporarily located on 33 Chłodna Street, thus after expulsion from its previous location on Krochmalna 92.

On the pictures on the left there are three horse dragged wagons on the Zelazna street (at nr. 77) just before turning right to Chłodna street.

Subsequently, when Chłodna Street (see picture on the left) was exluded from the ghetto, Korczak was forced to transfer his establishment to 16 Sienna Street.

At Chłodna Street 26 (now nr. 22) (close to Zelazna str.)
early in 1942 a wooden footbridge was built for Jews crossing between the ‘Little’ and ‘Big’ Ghettos. Below the bridge ran Chłodna Street, excluded from the Ghetto because of its important role as a transport and communications link.
